The praying mantis here is named Joan. Sorry, I don't make the rules.

My favorite bug is the Walking Stick. The last one I saw was in Texas near Austin at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center - not be missed BTW.

You are absolutely right about US being the aliens. Mankind has done no favors for the earth or the rest of the universe for that matter.

I almost put a stick bug photo in this newsletter but at that point it was too far off the rails.

Jumping spiders are my current favorite bug. I think they are good omens for me and they are so cute when their front legs are in the air waving around

I once found a praying mantis egg sac-thingy (the internet tells me it's called an ootheca) and put it in a jar on my windowsill. The babies were adorable, but all over my bedroom.

Silverfish are the best because they look like they are swimming across tile. They are also kinda icky.

Oh man, love the post and video. We have a brown praying mantis in our back yard, living among our monstera plants. We have a big sliding screen door to the yard from the kitchen and one of our cats had noticed the praying mantis from inside. He ran out to investigate and I caught him just in time before he pounced on it. Praying mantises are amazing creatures.

I hope for your sake you didn't come across the articles about praying mantises eating hummingbirds in your descent down the insect rabbit hole.
