I can envision a number of philosophical metaphors here: the need for complex and specific connections to access old video being an allegory for cognitive psychology; apple-themed puns in the form of displaying your “core” in a crate; constructing a preferred outward persona from purposefully selected pieces; the complex and outmoded digital artifacts housed in simple, analog shells. This newsletter has it all.
I think you left out the part where you are opening a side business transferring old video. I’ve got a couple Hi8s of my kids I’d love to send you. Seriously now, good stuff … we don’t change, it’s true, at least not at the essence of our being.
I was considering it but I think what I would want to ask is more than what most people would want to spend. If that sounds interesting, send me an email and we'll get your tapes done.
It's so cool that you have old videos of yourself. I have none - my family members were not not camera types and video cameras were too expensive for us back in the 70s and 80s. I like the revelation that you have always been the same person. I wrote a memoir and came to a similar conclusion.
This is so fascinating! I just wrote a piece about physical media which was inspired by a 25-year-old cassette recording I found of myself (where I also had a ridiculous accent that has since been socialized out of me). Really incredible stuff
Welcome to the wonderful, lucrative world of apple crate vending
Love the line about exposing the core of who we are. So true. ✨

I'd like to say that was all intentional.

USB-C on the top Firewire 400 on the bottom (also known as "The Dongle Mullet") 😂
I have been to dongle hell and back.
