Some of you might know that I have been photographing the main building of the old Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, since 2007.
I lived directly across the street from it for six years, and during that time I would "kill" (or finish) every roll of film I shot with a photo of the building's famous silhouette.
I wrote about this in detail in Newsletter #117 from January 31, 2022. You can also visit dominosugarfactory.com to see more of the project because somehow I still own this domain.
That newsletter was recently published in the Yale School of Architecture’s journal called “Perspecta 56 - Not Found” (MIT Press). You can purchase a copy here.
Since writing Newsletter #117, I've returned to the corner of South 1st Street and Kent Ave. several times to watch the building undergo its final transformation.
You know, things change.
And all of this was just a matter of time.
Behold the final form.
This is what I like to call adaptive reuse/post-industrial fetishism.
Thinking about it now, sometimes I wish there had been a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Apple Store blocks away when I lived there. Things might have been easier.
But really what the neighborhood needed was an ice skating rink.
Sure enough, one now exists, right across the street from my old place in what they call Domino Square.
I would have gone skating but I didn't want to hurt myself. I don't have good health insurance and I can't risk it.
I will be taking the rest of 2024 off and will return with more stories in January 2025. Thank you to everyone who has read this letter this year. I appreciate every one of you.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
